From your face to your feet, our winter survival guide will keep your skin in smooth, supple shape all season long!

Save Face

Winter worry: Flaking and chapped cheeks with dry patches, more visible lines around the eyes.

Why it happens: Since your face is always exposed to the elements, it takes a cold-weather beating. Frosty winds chip away at the outermost layer of skin that serves as our protective barrier, leaving our faces vulnerable. This barrier's main function is to regulate the water balance in the skin, and when it's compromised by the environment or by aggressive cleansing, itchy skin results.

Skin saver: Wash with a gentle, creamy cleanser. Even if your skin is typically oily, don't worry. During winter, your skin can handle it. Try Therapy Systems Aromatic Cleaning Lotion ($29.50), which is suitable for removing makeup, too; Soothys Soothing Beauty Milk ($21); or Burt's Bees Orange Essence Facial Cleaner ($9).

Lips and Hands

YOUR LIPS
Winter worry:
Dryness and chapping, redness, a stinging sensation.

Why it happens: Unlike the rest of your face, your lips have almost no protective barrier, making them especially prone to dehydration.

Skin saver: Consistent use of lip balm is your best defense, since balms today feature almost as many nourishing ingredients as facial skincare products, including antioxidants.

Neutrogena's new Overnight Lip Treatment ($3.49) features nine different emollients in its light formula, including sesame and olive oils. Also try SCO Custom Lip Balm ($18), which can be infused with aloe vera for very dry lips, or Alchemy Medic Lipwear ($15), which has a slight shimmer.

YOUR HANDS
Winter worry: Roughness in the form of chalky white lines, painful cracked cuticles.

Why it happens: We use them for every task imaginable, and in the wintertime, our hands show this wear and tear in a major way. In addition, the overuse of antibacterial hand cleansers that contain alcohol is partly to blame.

Skin saver: Keeping your hands moist and comfortable is as easy as keeping a tube of hand cream wherever you are. And nighttime is the best time to get this conditioning TLC underway.

Try Nivea's new Restorative Night Hand Crýme ($4.99), a rich formula with vitamins F and H (for strengthening the protective barrier); L'Occitane's Shea Butter Hand Cream ($21), which combines shea butter with honey and almond oil; and Bloom's Cuticle Quencher ($15), which softens dry and damaged cuticles with hazelnut oil.
