Hair-removal methods are better -- and less painful! -- than ever.

Depilatories
Skin that looks silky and feels smooth is your best accessory this season. So now is the time to say sayonara to hair that's been sprouting up in all the wrong places.

Smooth It Off
What's new: Depilatories dissolve hair below the skin's surface, resulting in a smoother, longer-lasting finish than you get by shaving. And now, you can choose from a variety of depilatory formulas, including lotions, creams, mousses, and gels, mostly without the ammonia-like odors of the past.

How-to: Apply product directly onto skin -- messy rubbing, a feature of the old-fashioned variety, is no longer required. Wait approximately five minutes, and wipe the product -- and your excess hair -- away.

Lasts for: Three to four days.
Ouch factor: Aside from a very mild tingling, you should experience no pain whatsoever.
Great to try: Nair No Touch Upper Lip Cream ($4.19), Nad's Squeegee & Creme Hair Removal System ($14.99), for the entire body.

Waxing and Shaving
Wax It Off

What's new: If being hair-free for weeks at a time is what you crave, then waxing is worth enduring it. Long considered the exclusive domain of spas and salons, waxing at home has become increasingly simple and less painful than it used to be.

How-to: Most waxing kits now contain the bonus of both a pre-waxing cleansing lotion and a post-wax soothing lotion in addition to the wax itself. After heating it in the microwave, it's a good idea to test the wax's temperature by dabbing a bit on your inner wrist. It should feel warm -- not scalding or cool -- to the touch. If you spot any stray hairs after the treatment, resist the urge to give it another go with the wax; you'll risk seriously bruising the area. Reach for a tweezer instead.

Lasts for: Four weeks, if you're a first-time waxer; longer if you've waxed previously.

Ouch factor: Even at its most gentle, there's no sugarcoating the fact that waxing can sting. The best way to soothe its bite is to desensitize the skin first with a product such as GiGi Anesthetic Numbing Spray ($12), which has a high concentration of calming lidocaine.

Great to try: Surgi-Wax Gel Wand Hair Remover for Face & Brows ($5), Poetic Waxing Kit ($40), for use all over the body.

Shave It Off
What's new: Everyone's favorite hair-removal method keeps getting better and better. The biggest buzz this season is about razors that help you with the most sensitive spots, including the bikini line, underarm, and ankle.

How-to: No matter what shaver you use, you'll get the best results shaving on moist skin, preferably in the shower. Also, shave in the same direction as the hair grows, not against it, for cleanest results.
Lasts for: A few days.

Ouch factor: Unless you cut yourself, you're in the clear.

Great to try: Noxzema Bikini Razor ($2.99), Finishing Touch ($14.99), a battery-operated hair trimmer, Gillette Venus Divine ($8.50), features three moisturizer-coated blades that help gently lift the hair into the razor.
