Pattern is one of the most powerful design elements. Take a look at these bedrooms that mix things up with stripes, checks, plaids, and florals.

True Blue Classic

With a profusion of florals, stripes, and checks, this bedroom may have seemed destined to decorating disaster. Instead, it became a jewel, thanks to interior designer Susan Mooney.

Faced with a large, lackluster space, Mooney added cozy character by filling the room with pattern linked with the classic color combination of blue and white. "Blue is an extremely soothing and restful color," she says. "It makes for a calm retreat."

Checks and Balances

When Carolyn Tinseth encountered a small bedroom in a Chicago-area showhouse, she didn't let size stand in the way of giving the space its personality. From every angle, checks, plaids, florals, and toile imbue the room with French flavor.

Linked by what Tinseth calls "spunky" reds and blues, the multiple patterns are right at home in the cozy quarters. And with good reason: The scale is such that no pattern overwhelms. On the walls, a soft blue-and-white plaid wall covering provides a calming backdrop. On the bed, tiny red and white checks help quiet the bolder red floral curtains hanging from the four stainless-steel posts.

The Power of Pattern

  • Consider scale. A large print can overpower a small room; a small print would seem lost in a big room. After you
determine which size print works with your room, let one
pattern dominate, then accent it with smaller-scale designs.
  • Connect with color. The patterns don't have to be the same color, but they should be within the same color family. The continuity can be as simple as picking up the blue in a multicolor floral print and repeating it in a stripe.
  • Team compatible fabrics. Choose fabrics with the same
"attitude," such as casual or formal. A formal silk damask, for example, would look out of place paired with a casual
gingham. But gingham and ticking would be good partners, as would damask and moire stripes.
  • Balance the room. Pattern has weight, so it needs to be evenly distributed throughout a room. There are exceptions to distributing pattern throughout a room, though. If you're trying to draw attention to one part of a room, such as the seating area of a bedroom, you can cluster the pattern in that area. The key is to make sure that the area without pattern still has visual weight. This can be achieved through furnishings or architectural details.
