Winter Interest

Although they go by different names, rhododendrons and azaleas share the genus Rhododendron. Although they share many characteristics, the two groups can be recognized by the form their flowers take. Azaleas have funnel shaped blossoms, while rhododendrons have trumpet-shaped flowers. In both cases, the brilliance and quantity of flowers make for a spectacular spring display.

Notable Varieties
Southern Indian hybrids; evergreen; Zones 8 - 10; flower colors include white, violet, pink, red, and salmon

  • Krume hybrids; evergreen; Zones 6 - 9; slowly grows to 6 feet
  • Gable hybrids; evergreen; Zones 6 - 9; flower colors include red, purple, light violet, orange, and pink; in fall, leaves turn red in colder parts of range
  • Glenn Dale hybrids; evergreen; Zones 6 - 9; 6 - 8 feet tall; wide range of bloom times; large flowers in red, pink, white, and orange, some with contrasting markings
  • Shammarello hybrids; evergreen; Zones 5 - 9; among the hardiest evergreen azaleas
  • Exbury hybrids; deciduous; Zones 6 - 9 (some to Zone 4); large, brightly colored flowers in hugh clusters; grow 4 - 8 feet tall and wide; colorful fall foliage
  • R. arborescens (sweet azalea); Zones 5 - 8; white flowers in early June; dark red fall foliage
  • R. calendulaceum (flame azalea); Zones 5 - 7; yellow, orange, and scarlet flowers (buy in bloom to assure color choice); 6 - 8 feet tall
Care
Azaleas require minimal maintenance. Remove spent blooms in spring, and feed with a fertilizer designed for acid-loving plants as directed on the package.

Planting
Plant azaleas in the spring in well-drained acid soil. To improve drainage and lower the pH of the soil, add plenty of peat moss to the bed before planting.
