Companion Plants
Good to plant with spring-blooming bulbs, such as daffodils.

Native to Europe, as its name suggests, English daisy produces dwarf daisy single, semi-double, or double flowers in white, pink, rose, and red in early spring to early summer on 4- to 8-inch plants. Due to its diminutive size, English daisy is a fine plant for rock gardens, as an edging plant, or in combination with spring bulbs.

It also self-sows if well-established in ideal conditions and is thus a good choice for naturalizing in woodland meadows. English daisy is actually a perennial and grown as such in Zones 4 to 7, but it is often grown as a biennial or as an annual in areas with long growing seasons (Zones 8 to 10).

Notable Varieties

  • 'Bright Carpet' grows 4 to 6 inches.
  • 'Buttons' is a small-flowered variety.
  • 'Dresden China' produces light pink double blooms.
  • 'Goliath' and 'Habenera' produce larger flowers.
  • 'Kito' bears cherry-red blooms.
  • 'Monstrosa' has dark red double blooms.
  • 'Morning Blush' grows 18 inches tall and its pink flowers often rebloom.

Care
English daisy needs partial shade in moist, rich, well-drained soil and does best in cool climates and poorly in hot, humid areas. Never allow to dry out. Feed early in the season and water frequently. Cut back after flowering to prevent weediness. Add winter mulch in Zones 6 and colder. Deadhead regularly because it can reseed prolifically and become a lawn weed in some climates.

Planting
Plant established seedlings in spring Zones 4 to 7. In Zones 8 to 10, plant in fall as an annual for spring bloom, then tear out when summer heat hits.

Pests and Diseases
Powdery mildew; spray in early spring with a fungicide if it becomes a problem.
