Candytuft is a low-growing perennial or annual that is ideal as an edging or underplanting, in rock or hanging gardens, and in combination with other shorter plants.

In springtime, clusters of small, showy, pure-white flowers cover a compact mound of attractive dark green leaves. The foliage -- groupings of small, slender leaves -- adds visual interest to the garden.

Perennial or evergreen candytuft (Iberis sempervirens) grows well in Zones 3 to 9. Globe candytuft (Iberis umbellata) is a cool-season annual that blooms until temperatures regularly hit the 80s F.

Notable Varieties

  • 'Alexander's Beauty' is an early-blooming, 10-inch tall variety.
  • 'Autumn Beauty' and 'Autumn Snow' bear white flowers that rebloom in fall.
  • 'Little Gem' grows to just 6 inches tall.

Care
Likes average, very well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil amended with organic matter. Shear after flowering to promote reblooming. Mulch perennial type during winter in colder climates and cut it back severely every two years to promote new growth and reduce woodiness.

Planting
In Zones 3 to 7, plant established plants of perennial candytuft 8 inches apart any time in spring; plant annual type two or three weeks before your region's last frost date.In Zones 8 and warmer, you can also plant perennial candytuft in fall; plant annual candytuft in fall only for winter color during cooler months.
