This small tree can reach 30 feet, and can be trained to a single stem or allowed to develop multiple trunks. The snow-white, fragrant flower trusses resemble the common lilac's but appear about a month later. Its smooth, reddish bark resembles that of a cherry tree.

Notable Varieties

  • 'Ivory Silk' is a Canadian variety with upright, symmetrical form; this variety flowers very young.
  • Manchurian tree lilac (Syringa reticulata 'mandschurica') is similar but smaller and more shrubby.
