This is the weeping willow often seen growing beside ponds. It is a large, fast-growing tree with long, low branches that form a broad, open, rounded crown. The narrow leaves are bright green and up to 4 inches long, turning golden yellow in fall. In spring, male flowers are silvery, silky catkins.

Like most willows, it is a messy tree prone to wind damage, pests, and diseases and for that reason is best sited in an open area, away from houses and pavement.

Notable Varieties
Salix alba (White Willow) is similar and available in a variety of hybrids.

Care
If needed, prune in summer or fall.

Planting
Plant balled-and-burlapped or container-grown plants in spring or fall in full sun in deep, moist soil.

Pests and Diseases
Prone to many diseases and insects.
