Showy Foliage

An annual often grown from seed, coleus is popular not for the lavender or white spikes it produces from late spring to late summer, but for the wide variety of colors, patterns, shapes and size of its foliage. Coleus ranges in height from 6 to 36 inches; its leaves are mottled with reds, whites, greens, and burgundies.

It makes an excellent container plant in pots, tubs, and hanging baskets and is an easy-care houseplant. Coleus combines well with other shade plants in garden beds, and enlivens a shady spot with bright color when planted in groups of 10, 20, or more.

Notable Varieties

  • 'Black Dragon' grows 12 inches tall and produces red leaves with purple edges.
  • 'Fiji Mix' has fringed leaves in a variety of colors on plants 12 to 18 inches tall.
  • 'Rainbow Mix' reaches 14 to 16 inches tall with leaves in numerous colors.
  • Wizard' produces solid colors and mixes on 10 to 12 inch plants.

Care
Thrives in partial to deep shade in rich, moist, well-drained soil, with some types tolerating full sun if watered well. Pinch off the tips of young plants to encourage bushiness. In fall, if desired, dig up and pot plants and bring inside before last frost. Place in the sunniest window possible.

Planting
Plant nursery seedlings after all danger of frost has passed. It's also extremely easy to take cuttings from plants in fall to overwinter plants for spring. Just cut off several 3-inch ends of plants before frost (or from plants being overwintered in pots indoors) and put in a glass of water in a sunny window. When roots are about an inch long, pot up in potting soil.

Pests and Diseases
Mites, mealybugs, and leaf spot can occasionally pose problems.

House Plant Care
Thrives as a houseplant in medium to bright light. Keep well-watered, fertilize once a month, and pinch off tips frequently to keep plant in bounds and prevent legginess.
