An annual often grown from seed,
coleus is popular not for the lavender or white spikes it produces
from late spring to late summer, but for the wide variety of
colors, patterns, shapes and size of its foliage. Coleus ranges
in height from 6 to 36 inches; its leaves are mottled with reds,
whites, greens, and burgundies.
It makes an excellent container
plant in pots, tubs, and hanging baskets and is an easy-care
houseplant. Coleus combines well with other shade plants in garden
beds, and enlivens a shady spot with bright color when planted
in groups of 10, 20, or more.
