Achillea (Yarrow)

Unparalleled for producing a summer-long supply of flowers for the garden, shasta daisies bear white daisy-like single, semi-double, or double flowers with yellow centers.

They're held aloft on strong stems above coarsely-toothed dark green foliage and are prized as long-lasting cut flowers. Shasta daisies can be used in masses in foral borders or as middle-of-the-border plants, depending on height. Smaller types can be used as edging plants.

Notable Varieties

  • 'Aglaya' produces frilly fully double flowers on 2 to 2 1/2 plants.
  • 'Alaska' grows 20 inches tall with large white single blooms.
  • 'Polaris' bears white flowers on 3 foot plants.
  • 'Snow Lady' is an early-blooming variety that grows 6 to inches tall and pure white single blooms.
  • 'Thomas Killen' has large flowers with double rows of petals and crested gold centers on 2-1/2 tall plants.

Care
Plant in full sun or partial shade in Zones 7 and warmer, in moist, well-drained soil. Good drainage is critical or these flowers may die out in winter in Zones 6 and colder. Fertilize by working in compost two or three times during the season or by applying a slow-release fertilizer, following label directions exactly. Deadhead regularly or cut back after first flush of flowering to promote reblooming. Mulch in winter in colder climates. Stake taller varieties.

Planting
Plant established plants in spring. Divide in early spring or fall every two years or as needed.

Pests and Diseases
Aphid and verticillium can cause problems.
