Even if you've never gardened before, you can grow yarrow with little effort. Yarrow is an amazing perennial that is hardy throughout most of the United States and can withstand heat, drought, and cold.

It's valued in the garden for its ferny, gray-green or dark green, spicy-scented foliage and showy, flat-topped clusters of flowers in pink, red, white, or yellow appearing from late spring to early fall. Fern-leaf yarrow (Achillea filipendulina) is one of the best flowers for drying. In fact, it will dry right in the vase. Common yarrow (Achillea millefolium) dries less well but like fern-leaf yarrow, is excellent for cutting. Common yarrow can be invasive in some conditions.

Notable Varieties

  • Ajuga reptans alba has green leaves and white flowers.
  • 'Atropurpurea' produces dark bronze-purple leaves and bears blue flowers.
  • 'Gaiety' has bronze-purple leaves and and lilac flowers.
  • 'Burgundy Glow' has foliage variegated in white, rose, pink, and green and blue flowers.
  • 'Bronze Beauty' produces blue flowers and bronze leaves.
  • 'Pink Beauty' bears pink flowers and has green leaves.
Care
Yarrows are tough plants but should receive full sun as any amount of shade reduces flowering and causes plants to flop. Likes average to sandy soil; gets leggy and floppy if soil is too rich, wet, or heavy. Drought-tolerant; prefers dry conditions and otherwise becomes prone to fungal diseases. Stake taller plants. Remove faded flowers to encourage long blooming.

Planting

Plant nursery seedlings in spring, spacing 12 to 24 inches apart. In Zones 6 and warmer, you can also plant in fall.

Pests and Diseases
Avoid overwatering as mildew and fungal diseases may result. Damp soil can cause yarrows to rot.
