Sending out golden explosions of flowers in late summer and early autumn, goldenrod is as excellent for the vase as it is for the flowerbed.

It's also good for wildflower plantings. Contrary to popular belief, goldenrod does not aggravate allergies. Its pollen is borne only by insects who carry it on their legs from flower to flower. It's not released into the air or wind at all.

Notable Varieties
Avoid transplanting the wild type into your garden and weed any seedlings that volunteer there. It's invasive and prone to mildew problems.

Care
Likes average to poor, well-drained soil. Does best with moderate moisture but is also drought-tolerant. Avoid fertilizing; tall types may need staking if soil is too rich. Trim spent blooms frequently for bouquets.

Planting
Plant established plants in spring in all zones or also fall in Zones 7 to 9. Mulch to conserve moisture.

Pests and Diseases
Bothered by few pests or diseases.
