What are pawpaws?
Q: What are pawpaws? The muffins sound interesting
but I have no idea what pawpaws are. I know that my pets have
paws...hahaha
A: It is a funny name when you think about it! Pawpaws
are the largest edible fruit that is native to the United States.
The unique flavor of the fruit resembles a blend of various tropical
flavors, including banana, pineapple, and mango. The flavor and
custard-like texture make pawpaws a good substitute for bananas
in almost any recipe. The common names, 'poor man's banana,'
'American custard apple,' and 'Kentucky banana' reflect these
qualities.
I remember as a child my mom
singing to me (she used my name instead of Nellie) the following
folk song:
The Pawpaw Patch Song:
Where, oh where, is dear little Nellie?
Where, oh where, is dear little Nellie?
Where, oh where, is dear little Nellie?
Way down yonder in the pawpaw patch.
Come on, boys, let's go find her.
Come on, boys, let's go find her,
Come on, boys, let's go find her,
Way down yonder in the pawpaw patch.
Picking up pawpaws, puttin' 'em in your pocket,
Picking up pawpaws, puttin' 'em in your pocket,
Picking up pawpaws, puttin' 'em in your pocket,
Way down yonder in the pawpaw patch.
