A creamy white layer of frosting covers these dark chocolate brownies, while a quick turn under the broiler just toasts the coconut. It's amazing what a difference broiling makes in this simple and delicious dessert.

Brownies with Broiled Coconut Frosting

Brownies:
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter OR margarine, cut into pieces
2 tablespoons water
1 (8-ounce) box NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Bars, broken into pieces
2 large eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
Coconut Frosting:
2 cups sweetened flaked coconut
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup butter OR margarine, melted
1/4 cup NESTLÉ® CARNATION® Evaporated Milk
  1. FOR BROWNIES: PREHEAT oven to 350° F. Grease 13 x 9-inch baking pan.
  2. HEAT, stirring constantly, sugar, butter and water in large, heavy-duty saucepan just to boiling. Remove from heat. Add baking bars; stir until melted. Stir in eggs one at a time. Add flour, vanilla extract, baking soda and salt; stir well. Spread into prepared baking pan.
  3. BAKE for 16 to 20 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out slightly sticky. Cool in pan for 20 minutes.
  4. FOR COCONUT FROSTING: COMBINE coconut, brown sugar, butter and evaporated milk in medium bowl. Spread over cooled brownies. Broil 4-inches from heat for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown.

Makes 24.
