Wow! Fresh apples and strawberries make this shortcake sing. Top with whipped cream and a touch of mint, and you have a family dessert favorite.

Warm Braeburn Apple-Strawberry Shortcakes

2 braeburn apples
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
2 cups sliced strawberries
1 tablespon balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon butter
2 teaspoons chopped fresh mint
4 prepared shortcakes or pound cake slices
2 cups whipped cream or vanilla frozen yogurt
  1. Core apples and cut into 3/4-inch pieces. Toss with lemon juice and set aside.
  2. Combine sugar and water in a large skillet. Stir to dissolve sugar over high heat; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-high and stir in apples. Cook 2 minutes, or just until apples soften slightly.
  3. Toss strawberries with balsamic vinegar. Stir into apple mixture and cook 30 seconds, or just to heat strawberries. Stir in butter and mint and remove from heat.
  4. To Serve: Set shortcakes on dessert plates. Pour sauce over each shortcake. Top with whipped cream or frozen yogurt.

Makes 4 servings.
