Favorite Chocolate Cake

Favorite Chocolate CakeDouble the yum! This is a great, made-from-scratch recipe for classic chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Your family will be asking you to make this cake over and over again.

Recipe Ingredients:

2 (2-ounce) bars NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Unsweetened Chocolate Baking Bars, broken into pieces
1/2 cup butter or margarine
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1/2 cup water
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon lemon juice, or white distilled vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting:
2 ( 2-ounce) bars NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Unsweetened Chocolate Baking Bars, broken into pieces
1/4 cup butter or margarine
3 1/2 cups (1 pound) powdered sugar
1/2 to 2/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt

Cooking Directions:

  1. Microwave baking bars in small, microwave-safe bowl on HIGH (100%) power for 1 minute; stir. Microwave at additional 10 to 20-second intervals, stirring until smooth; cool to room temperature.
  2. Beat sugar and butter in large mixer bowl. Add flour, milk, water, eggs, lemon juice, vanilla extract, baking powder, baking soda and salt; beat on low speed until blended. Beat on high speed for 2 minutes. Beat in melted chocolate.
  3. Pour into two well-greased and floured 9-inch round baking pans or one 13x9x2-inch baking pan.
  4. Bake in preheated 350°F oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 20 minutes; invert onto wire racks to cool completely before frosting.
  5. For Chocolate Buttercream Frosting: Microwave baking bars and butter in small, microwave-safe mixer bowl on HIGH (100%) power for 45 seconds; stir. Microwave at additional 10 to 20 second intervals, stirring until smooth; cool to room temperature.
  6. Beat sugar, milk, vanilla extract and salt into chocolate mixture just until of spreading consistency. Makes 2 cups approximately.
