Served on toasted hamburger buns, this great tasting sandwich is a real winner with young and old alike.
Recipe Ingredients:
Sloppy Joe Meat Sauce:
2 pounds ground beef
1 Spanish small onion, chopped
2 large cloves garlic, finely minced (or 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder)
2 celery ribs with leaves, chopped
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1 (15-ounce) can crushed tomatoes (1 2/3 cups)
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon steak sauce
1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt
1/4 teaspoon ground mustard
1/4 teaspoon paprika
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Buns:
8 hamburger buns
8 teaspoons butter, softened - divided use
Cooking Directions:
- For Sloppy Joe Meat Sauce: In a Dutch oven over medium heat, cook beef, onion, garlic, celery and green pepper until the meat is not longer pink and the vegetables are tender; drain excess grease.
- Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Bring mixture to a boil and reduce heat to low, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 35 to 40 minutes.
- For Buns: When meat sauce is ready, spread each bun half with 1 teaspoon of butter and toast under the broiler until golden brown.
- To Serve: Spoon Sloppy Joe Meat Sauce onto the bottom half of toasted buns and crown with top halves, or to serve open-faced, simply ladle meat sauce atop each toasted bun half.
Make 8 servings.
