Whitehouse Sandwich
A hearty, open-faced hot sandwich with slices of chicken (or turkey breast) and ham topped with a sherried cheddar cheese sauce and crisp bacon crumbles.
Recipe Ingredients:
Sauce:
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 3/4 cups milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
Dash of pepper
1 cup shredded Wisconsin Sharp Cheddar cheese
1/4 cup cooking Sherry
Base:
8 slices toasted white bread
8 thin slices chicken or turkey breast
8 thin slices cooked ham
1/2 cup bacon crumbles
1/4 cup grated Wisconsin Romano cheese
Cooking Directions:
- For Sauce: Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Blend in flour and seasonings. Gradually add milk and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Gradually add cheese and stir until melted. Blend in wine and set aside.
- For Base: Place 2 toast slices on 4 oven-proof plates. Top slices with a layer of chicken and ham. Pour sauce over top; sprinkle with bacon and Romano.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes or until golden and bubbly.
